Lois Evelyn Lindsay Brown, age 89 of Rocky Mount died Tuesday, May 16, 2017. Born in New Haven, CT to the Rev. Dr. M.E.N. Lindsay and Melcora Gruber Lindsay, deceased. Also predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Walter Chester Brown, Jr.; her twin sisters-in-law and spouses, Betty Lee Brown Shearer and John Shearer, Ann Bolling Brown Pace and Robert Pace; nephew, John Douglas Shearer; and former son-in-law, Michael (Mickey) Cantrell. Living in South Britain CT, she attended a one room school. Her family moved to Lynchburg, VA in 1941 and then to Tazewell, Virginia in 1943 where she graduated from Tazewell High School. Lois graduated from Lynchburg College and taught high school for three years in Pearisburg, VA, before her marriage to Walter Chester Brown, Jr. in 1951. She moved to Rocky Mount, VA., and taught 6 th grade for one year, before starting a family. She was active in the following civic organizations: The Junior Women's Club, Franklin Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Boy and Girl Scouts of America, the Developmental Center of Franklin County, the DAR, and was an Elder emeritus of Rocky Mount Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) where she served in numerous capacities. She is survived by her children, W. Colby Brown and wife Mandy Guilliams Brown, Daphne Brown Oakes and husband Steven Oakes, and Lois Lindsay Brown Cantrell and friend Ronald (Ronnie) Wray; grandchildren, W. Cooper Brown and wife Flo Page Brown, Forrest J. Brown, S. Clay Oakes and wife Savannah Oakes, Evelyn Oakes Wilson and husband Norbert (Bert) Wilson, Michael Lee Cantrell II, and Dr. Chesten Lindsay Cantrell; great-granddaughters, McKenzie Oakes, Skyler Oakes and Ellie Wilson; great-grandsons, Bennett Wilson, Tyler Fellows and Tatum Oakes; sisters and brothers-in-law, Joan Lindsay Redford and Dr. Raymond Redford, Carol Lindsay Hagy and Dr. J. Albert Hagy, Sr.; brother-in-law and wife, Daniel S. Brown and Suzanne Martin Brown; special niece and next door neighbor, Nettie Shearer and spouse, Denise Michele Gerstler; nieces and their families, Amy Jo Redford, Linda Ruth Redford Verheul, Alyson Carol Hagy, Laura Lee Redford, Melchora Hagy Alexander, Amy Brown Peterson; nephews and their families, Robert Stephen Pace, Jr., Dr. Richard Brown Pace, Dr. John Albert Hagy, Jr., Dr. Mark Lindsay Hagy, Matthew Raymond Redford, Daniel Simpson Brown, Jr. Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Rocky Mount Christian Church with Rev. Matthew Ricks officiating. Arrangements by Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
