Lois B. Overfelt, age 92 passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at home on December 5, 2025.
She was born on April 30, 1933 in Roanoke, VA to Robert and Loretta Brizendine and attended Andrew Lewis High School in Salem, VA.
Lois was predeceased in death by her husband of 64 years, Garland H. Overfelt Sr., her son, Garland H. Overfelt Jr. (Jr), and two sisters, Isabel Eyler and Doris Ricker.
She is survived by her children, Robert Overfelt (Melonie), Greg Overfelt (Baybee), Carla Keegan (Scott), Lori Brown (Tim); grandchildren, Nicole, Sam, Jonathan, Kelly, Courtney, Hunter, and Will; great-grandchildren, Trevor, Kinzie, Joshua, Brooklyn, Aiden, Jakoby, Christian, Logan, Ezra, Junior, Amara, and Serenity along with many nieces and nephews.
Lois’ life was filled with a great love of her five (5) children. She was the proud wife of a Naval Officer and did a large part of raising her children during their early years on her own because of Garland’s frequent month(s) long overseas deployments.
Lois studied Cosmetology while living in Virginia Beach but due to her numerous family commitments never managed to open her own beauty shop. She was always available for any teenager who needed a quick haircut {usually the night before work began for the summer at Lakeside Amusement Park}.
She canned hundreds of quarts of green beans, pickled beets, and pickles every year from their garden. She also froze corn and canned all flavors of jelly from fresh fruits. She enjoyed many years of travel with Garland, camping and attending Fleet Reserve meetings and ship reunions across the country. She also enjoyed spending time at the beach. One of her favorite past times of late was watching “her” birds eat from her birdfeeders.
Above all else, she cherished spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren who were her pride and joy. She never met a child she did not love. She always had a smile on her face and a good sense of humor. She was a devoted wife and stayed by Garland’s side during his time of incapacity before he passed away in February 2019. She was a lifetime member of Red Hill Church of the Brethren.
Lois was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend and will be greatly missed.
The family would like to thank her longtime friend and hairdresser, Geraldine Wood, her devoted caregivers, Melissa Royalty, Melissa Carter, Joli Atkins and Riley Ryan; along with her granddaughter, Nicole Blankenship; great-granddaughters, Kinzie and Brooklyn Blankenship and Courtney Kelly who all made it possible to spend her final days resting comfortably in her own home.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 11, 2025 starting at 2:00 p.m. at the Flora Funeral Chapel 665 S. Main St. Rocky Mount, Va 24151. The family will receive guests one hour prior to the funeral service. Interment will follow in Mountain View Memorial Park, Franklin County.
By the way Mom, this obituary is for you (Mom read the newspaper every day and studied the obituary page to see if any of her friends had passed away). We teased her that she was making sure her name didn’t show up; well, here it is. We love you and will miss you forever, Mom.
