Luther Edward Young, age 93 of Virgil H. Goode Highway, Rocky Mount, passed away peacefully Thursday, October 23, 2008, surrounded by his family.
He was predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Hattie McGhee Young.
Luther was a kind, loving man who always lent a helping hand to those in need, never expecting anything in return. He was well known locally for his love of bluegrass music and flat-footing. He entered and won every flat-footing contest as long as his health allowed.
Mr. Young is survived by his children and spouses, Etta Mae and Ralph Young of Rocky Mount, Earl and Betty Young of Boones Mill, David and Vickie Young of Rocky Mount, Doris Ann and Bobby Radford of Ferrum; his grandchildren, Cliff Young of Rocky Mount, Vicky and Paul Sheesley of Rocky Mount, Marci and Todd Stone of Bedford, Troy and Crystal Young of Wirtz, Craig Young and Jessica Atkins of Boones Mill; great-grandchildren, Caleb, Marshall and Mason Sheesley of Rocky Mount, Kamryn Stone of Bedford; his special friend, Evelyn Oakes and family of Snow Creek; sisters, Blanche Sink of Collinsville, Roxie Jarrett of Fieldale; a special niece, Marie Whitt of Rocky Mount; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family would like to thank the staff of Fork Mountain Adult Rest Home and Franklin Healthcare for their care and attention. A very special thank you to Billy Tosh for all your help and time, especially for the trips out to breakfast and for letting Luther drive his final trip on his 93rd birthday, July 11th. Also thank you to the family, friends and neighbors who came to visit, sent cards, called, and especially the prayers.
Funeral services will be conducted from Flora Funeral Chapel 2 p.m. Sunday with Rev. Eddie Peters and Dr. Paul Stone officiating. Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park.
Flowers will be appreciated or donations may be made to the Rocky Mount Fire Department, c/o Chief Posey Dillon, 200 Brookshire Drive, Rocky Mount, Va. 24151 or to Fork Mountain Rescue Squad, c/o Captain Doug Nunn, 1822 Fork Mountain Road, Bassett, Va. 24055.
His family will be receiving friends from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at Flora Funeral Service, 665 South Main Street, Rocky Mount.
