Lois “Madeline” Chitwood Brown, age 81 of Salem passed away Monday, January 16, 2012 at Richfield Retirement Community. Born in 1930 Madeline was the seventh of eleven children born to the late William H. and Alice Hubbard Chitwood of Redwood in Franklin County. Family members who passed on before her include her dear daughter, Judy B. McKee, brothers W. Coleman Chitwood and his wife Christine, Oliver Chitwood and his wife Ottie, Calvin Chitwood, Daniel Chitwood and an infant brother; Sisters Isabel C. Bowles and husband Thomas, and Peggy C. Turman; brothers-in-law Jewel “Buddy” Brown and Dale Brown; Sister-in-law Geraldine G. Chitwood. Madeline will leave an empty space in the lives of her family including her husband of 62 years, Kenneth I. Brown of Salem, son Robert L. Brown and his companion Juliet Silver of Moneta, daughter Carole “Sue” B. Lilly and husband Charlie of Maryville, IL, and dear granddaughter Jennifer Lilly and her fiancé Scott Martin, both of Indianapolis, IN. Madeline was a charter member of Green Ridge Baptist Church in Roanoke. She was a graduate of Glade Hill High School and Cornett School of Business. Madeline retired from Sears as a manager after 30 years of service. For several years she served as a hostess for the Miss Virginia Pageant. She was a wonderful cook who often used fresh and canned vegetables from her large garden. She never missed a chance to cook for and entertain her relatives. Family was always dear to her. She took great pride in sewing clothes for her children as they grew as well as for her granddaughter. Madeline always looked her very best. She is also survived by her devoted sister Edith C. Perdue and companion Charles Swain of Roanoke, brothers Ulis N. Chitwood of Rocky Mount, Henry C. and wife Nadine Chitwood of Conway, SC; brothers-in-law Glenn Turman of Penhook, Harold and wife Lois Brown of Glade Hill, Crispen and wife Pat Brown of Brandon, FL.; sisters-in-law Jean B. and husband Doug Draper of Roanoke, and Shirley Brown of Rocky Mount; many dear nieces and nephews. Family and friends will be received 6-8 p.m. on Thursday at Flora Funeral Services in Rocky Mount. Funeral services will be conducted at Flora Funeral Chapel 2 p.m. Friday by Rev. Michael Palmer. Interment will follow at Mountain View Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Madeline’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association or to the Muscular Dystrophy Association in her daughter’s memory.
