Majorie Agee Milam was born April 5, 1929, in Danville, Virginia and died at her home in Rocky Mount, Virginia on February 10, 2026. She was predeceased by her parents, Stuart and Hattie Agee, her husband, Richard Thomas Milam, and a son in law, James F. Hannah.
Majorie graduated as valedictorian of both Schoolfield High School in 1946 and Averett College in 1948. She finished her B.A. degree at Longwood College in 1950 with a major in secondary school education and began her decades long teaching career. She taught English and history at Whitmell and Dan River High Schools in Pittsylvania County, Ferrum School in Franklin County, and retired as Chair of the English department at Franklin County High School. She was a member of the Virginia Education Association and inducted into Delta Kappa Gamma international professional society for women educators. Majorie instilled in everyone she knew her belief in the value of a good education.
Majorie married the love of her life, Richard “Dick” Milam in 1953 and moved with him to San Francisco while he completed his U.S. Army commitment after which they settled back in Virginia and started their family. Majorie was an avid sports fan, especially Virginia Tech football and ACC basketball.
She is survived by her daughter, Rev. Susan Milam Hannah (Mike Parrish) and son, Richard Thomas Milam, Jr. (Belinda). Also surviving are seven grandchildren: Stuart Hannah (Wendy), James Hannah, Timothy Hannah, Rebekah Hannah Tinsley (Zach), Kevin Hurt (Amy), Lindsay Milam Keister (Derek), and Sarah Milam; eight great-grandchildren: William Hurt (Katelyn), Nathan Hurt, Charlotte Jo, Rush, and Deacon Finch, Declan and Fiona Tinsley, and Liana Milam.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts to Carilion Clinic Hospice - Franklin, 453 S Main St, Rocky Mount, VA 24151.
Funeral services will be conducted at Flora Funeral Chapel, 11:30 a.m. Friday, February 13, 2026 with The Rev. Dr. Bonny Dillon officiating. Interment will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens at 3:00 p.m. Her family will receive friends beginning at 10:30 a.m. prior to the service. Arrangements by Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
