The Rev. Marion Glenn Goodpasture, Jr., of Ferrum died Friday, April 24, 2009 at the age of 84.
“M.G.” was reared in the Cedar Springs community of Wythe County, the only child of Marion Glenn Goodpasture, Sr. and Harriet Frances Dix Goodpasture. He served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific during World War II. A graduate of Rural Retreat High School, Asbury College, and Asbury Theological Seminary, he served the Lord Jesus Christ as a United Methodist minister, pastoring rural charges in Franklin, Montgomery, and Bland Counties, Virginia, as well as Inskip United Methodist Church in Knoxville, Tennessee. From 1965 until his retirement, he was on the administrative staff of Ferrum College, beginning as Director of Church and Community Services, and concluding as Director of Development. During his years at the college, M.G. sought to live out the institution’s motto: Non Sibi sed Aliis (Not Self but Others). As a founder and initial Director of the Blue Ridge Institute at Ferrum, he oversaw the growth of that program into the Blue Ridge Farm Museum of Appalachian mountain cultural life, and the annual Blue Ridge Folklife Festival at Ferrum. A founder of the Franklin County Community Action Program, he served as its Chairman for nearly twenty years. A recipient of the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award presented by Ferrum College, he was honored by Lions International and the Ferrum Lions Club as a Melvin Jones Fellow.
He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Thelma Hardesty Goodpasture; by six children, Herbert Glenn Goodpasture of Fredericksburg, Margaret Carol Goodpasture of Charlottesville, Samuel Hamilton Goodpasture of Richmond, Mark Duvon Goodpasture of Fredericksburg, Kay Goodpasture Powell of Broadway, and David Anthony Goodpasture, Senior Pastor of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Christiansburg, and by eight grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted from Vaughn Chapel, Ferrum College, 10 a.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Bruce Tuttle and the Rev. Mary White officiating. Interment will follow with a graveside service from Asbury United Methodist Church Cemetery, (Wythe County) 3 p.m. Tuesday.
