Martha Diane Hornick (Smith) was a beautiful, kind and creative person who dedicated her life to the care of others first. She passed away peacefully at home on Monday, September 21, 2026, in the care of her son Matthew.
She was 80 years old.
She was the first child of Frederick and Elizabeth Smith; the oldest of their six children.
She married Dean Phillip Hornick in 1969, and when he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, she dedicated herself to his care and the care of their three sons.
Following his death, she went to school and got a master’s degree in social work. As a social worker for troubled children, she had a positive impact on many young lives.
Some of the things that she particularly loved: art quilting, flowers, nature, baking, and reading. She worked with the La Leche league for support of nursing mothers, and she taught Hebrew to children.
She leaves behind her sons, Galaxy, Matthew, and Daniel, her grandchildren Haim, Simcha, and Clara, her five siblings, and a large circle of family and friends.
There will be a memorial service at the private family cemetery in early summer.
Arrangements by Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount – Smith Mountain Lake.
