Mary Chitwood Dowdy

Mary Chitwood Dowdy, age 78 of Rocky Mount died Saturday, April 3, 2010. She was born May 5, 1931 a daughter of the late Roy and Helen Chitwood. She was also preceded in death by her loving husband of 50 years, Wilson Dowdy; and brothers, Euell, Clifton and Walter. She was a wonderful mother who loved raising her family, cooking, and flowers. Her home was open to everyone. Surviving are her children, Johnny (Cindy) Dowdy, Frances Hurst, Martha (Micky) Frick, Lidia Dowdy, Patty (Larry) Austin, Billy Wayne (Mona) Dowdy, Mary Helen Shockley, James (Meisha) Dowdy and Henry (Donna) Dowdy; 23 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Emma (Billy) Shelton, Susie Chitwood, Claude (Sue) Chitwood, Frankie (Diane) Chitwood, Donnie (Mary) Chitwood, Bobby (Ella) Chitwood; sister-in-law, Minnie Chitwood; special friend, Irene Sigmon; and caregiver, Dr. Steven Lewis. Funeral services will be conducted from Flora Funeral Chapel 2 p.m. Tuesday with Pastor Tommy FiGart and Pastor Keith Vinson officiating. Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park. Her family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Monday at Flora Funeral Service, Rocky Mount and other times at the family home.
