Mary Jane Proctor, 79, passed away Saturday, August 8, 2026 after a long and brave battle with Breast Cancer. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Born on April 1, 1947 in Elkview, WV, Mary Jane grew up with a passion for creativity and community. She graduated from Herbert Hoover High School in 1965, where she was a member of the Marching Huskies, a proud majorette, and a talented artist for the school newspaper.

Mary Jane’s career path was as dynamic as her personality. After dedicating the early years to raising her two children, she ventured into the professional world working in several large medical offices in Charleston, WV. Her compassionate nature made her an invaluable asset in the healthcare community. Later when she moved to Smith Mountain Lake, VA, she found her true calling as a teacher’s aide in the Bedford County school system. Specializing in assisting children with special needs. Mary Jane’s kindness and patience touched the lives of countless students and their families.

On New Year’s Eve of 2001 Mary Jane married her childhood love, Steve. Together over the next 26 years they skillfully blended their families, creating a loving and faithful legacy. Her family was her pride and joy and her grandchildren were the center of her universe.

Mary Jane’s happiest moments was when she was surrounded by her family and her love language was cooking. She loved bringing everyone to the table, ensuring each person felt special with their favorite dish prepared.

Mary Jane was a member of EastLake Community Church in Moneta, VA, where her faith was evident in all she did. Mary Jane loved to plant flowers, where she found peace in nurturing beauty around her home. She also cherished boat rides on the lake with Steve and watching all the children ride the tube or learn how to ski.

Mary Jane will always be remembered for her fierce protection of her family. Her nurturing spirit mixed with her ability to make everyone feel valued, will leave a mark on those who had the privilege of knowing her. Her love, faith, and fighting spirit will continue to inspire all who were touched by her gentle heart.

Mary Jane was preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd and Francis Mitchell; sisters, Barb Logan and Betty Woods; brothers, Pete Mitchell (Karen) and Rick Mitchell. She is survived by her loving husband, Steve Proctor; children, Tucker Anderson of Pinch, WV, Misty Secrist (Stephen) of Pinch, WV, Stefanie Proctor of Roanoke, VA, and Chad Proctor (Karri) of Vinton, VA; grandchildren, Jake, Cierra, Alexis, Oscar, Travis, Macie, and Odin; sister, Iva Mitchell; along with nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Two services will take place to celebrate Mary Jane’s life. On Thursday, August 13, 2026 at 6 p.m., a service will be held at EastLake Community Church in Moneta, with her family receiving friends one hour prior to the service. Also on Sunday, August 16, 2026 at 1 p.m. at Hafer Funeral Home in Elkview, WV. Burial will be at Woody Cemetery in Pinch, WV.
