Mary Nolen Stephens, 91 of Penhook passed away Saturday, January 24, 2015 at Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital. She was born November 30, 1923, in Detroit, AL to Bert and Ellie Nolen. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Raphael W. Stephens, Sr., siblings, Annie Mae Nolen, Jewel Quick, J K Nolen and Billy Nolen and her granddaughter, Heather Denise Henry. Survivors include her daughter, Susan Henry (Kent) of Penhook VA, grandson Jason Henry (Meg) of Cornelius, NC and three great-grandchildren, Heather Michell Henry, Cole Gardner Henry and Miles Gardner Henry. She is also survived by her sisters, Marie Gilmore and Lois Collins as well as a brother Carl Nolen, and all of their extended families.
Mary, nicknamed Red, was admired for her independence, work ethic and neat yard which she mowed herself most of her life. She was proud to have been a WAC during World War II. An avid University of Alabama football fan, she loved to watch her Tide roll on Saturdays. She lived on her own in Sulligent, AL, until the fall of 2013 when her health began failing, and then she moved to Emeritus at Cave Spring in Roanoke. Per her request, there will be no funeral services. Private burial will be at a later date in Sulligent, Alabama.
