Maury L. Carter passed away in the early morning of Saturday, June 18, 2022 at the age of 89. Maury was husband to Elaine for 63 years, father of Daryl (Carrie, wife) and Dana (David, husband), grandfather of 10, an Army veteran, and founder of Maury L. Carter and Associates, Inc.
Maury is a Central Florida real estate business icon whose imprint can be seen in projects and people across the State of Florida, but because of his humility, he would not have wanted anyone to say that. It would take many words to adequately cover Maury’s legacy, and those words would still fall short in remembering and honoring him.
Maury was born into humble beginnings in Ferrum, Virginia on April 16 th , 1933. His father and mother, and his seven siblings (he was the youngest of 8) lived on their 80-acre family farm. Maury first learned to love land while working his family’s farm and this love lasted a lifetime. Maury can be described as a land baron, visionary, and thought leader of his generation. Maury is well known for his real estate success, but more importantly, his high standards of honesty, integrity, and generosity in the community. His word was his bond. Those still working at Maury L. Carter & Associates, Inc. often use one of his well-known phrases even today. When asked what we will do next in any situation, the answer is always: We will do the next RIGHT thing . His ethics, personality, stature, and likeability were contagious.
The State of Florida, and Central Florida in particular, were blessed to have had such visionary and industrious people such as Maury shaping the future for our local communities. Maury can be credited for much of the visionary growth and development of Central Florida. He is recognized as the man behind many notable and successful communities including Lake Nona, Hunter’s Creek, Eagle Creek, Metro West, Keene’s Pointe and Harmony. He also amassed a land portfolio for his investors, once totaling 35,000 acres. Maury has been featured in many publications such as Forbes Magazine , Florida Trend , Orlando Sentinel , Orlando Business Journal and GrowthSpotter .
Maury’s legacy goes beyond the development of communities; he was also the mastermind behind many conservation projects in Central Florida (totaling approximately 45,000 acres) including Split Oak Forest (1,700 acres), Wekiva Sulphur Springs Ranch (now known as Seminole State Forest - 6,100 acres), Triple N Ranch (10,337 acres) and Deep Creek (3,200 acres). These conservation projects are now owned by local and state agencies, and are conserved in perpetuity, providing a great benefit of use and recreation to the people of Florida, as well as leaving a legacy for wildlife conservation.
Maury and the ongoing operations of the company he founded, Maury L. Carter & Associates, Inc., can be credited for over two billion dollars in transactions on over 200,000 acres.
Maury will be missed by many - his family, friends and acquaintances. His life, and the way he lived it, had positive impacts on all the people that surrounded him. We truly do stand on the shoulders of Maury L. Carter and the legacy he built. It is our hope that we can continue to provide the same level of excellence that he lovingly and selflessly provided his family, friends and clients all over the State of Florida and beyond.
Service Details:
Reception will be held Thursday, June 30 from 6 to 8 pm at Country Club of Orlando.
Memorial Service will be held Sunday, July 17 at 10 am at Carter family cemetery with a party to follow at Carter’s Turner’s Creek pond property, both events in and near Ferrum, Virginia.
