Melvin Eugene Montgomery, born May 16, 1947, in Franklin County, Virginia, went to his heavenly home on October 23, 2015. He is survived by his children, Jill M. and Bill Hume, Thad and Gayle Montgomery, and Mandi M. Smith; Knut Bognø; his grandchildren, Grace Smith and Emma, Hayley, Heath and Heidi Montgomery; his step-grandchildren, Marisa and Erika Hume and Evan McNeil; his siblings, Margie and Kenneth Garber, Gerald and Martha, Norman and Deborah, and Etta and Gary Montgomery; and numerous nieces and nephews. He joins his parents, the late Roy and the late Velma Montgomery, in heaven. Melvin was a lifelong dairy farmer, a founding member of Burnt Chimney Volunteer Fire Department, a member of the Franklin County FFA Alumni, and a member of Germantown Brick Church of the Brethren. Melvin advanced Virginia agriculture in a variety of capacities throughout his life including serving on the Board of Directors of Cooperative Milk Producers, Virginia State Dairymen’s Association and Franklin County Farm Bureau. He loved to dance and to sing, and he traveled to all fifty states and fourteen foreign countries. He was a generous and giving community member and a friend to everyone he met. The family would like to thank Dr. Daniel Temeles, the late Doctor Gerald Schertz and the staff of Blue Ridge Cancer Center for their amazing and unwavering care and support. His family will receive friends at Flora Funeral Home in Rocky Mount, Virginia, on Sunday, October 25, 2015, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-9 p.m., and on Monday, October 26, 2015, from 6-8 p.m. A celebration of his life will be held at Franklin Heights Baptist Church on Tuesday, October 27, 2015, beginning at 2 p.m., with interment to follow at Mountain View Memorial Park. A meal will follow interment at Franklin Heights Baptist Church.
