On Friday August 14, 2015, Michael Joseph March, 60, passed away peacefully during the night at his Smith Mountain Lake home. Michael leaves behind his wife, Patty, and daughters Caitlin and Kelley. Survivors also include his father, William D. March, Sr. and his brother William D. March II (Dianne). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews along with his yellow lab Charlie.
Michael was a dedicated father and husband and will always be remembered for the love and support he gave to his wife of 30-years and his beloved daughters.
Michael and Patty March moved to Smith Mountain Lake in 1985, where Michael built his home, garage, and dock himself. Marchwood Farm was more than a home – it was Michael’s life joy.
Michael had an unparalleled work-ethic. He was an expert at everything. A jack of all trades, Michael was known as a contractor, handyman, renovationist, and beekeeper. There was nothing he could not fix (except maybe a computer).
His girls heard him say many times during their childhood, “You catch more flies with honey, than you do with vinegar.” Michael took heed in his saying, when he started keeping bees on a small scale in the early 2000s, alongside his best friend, Chuck Hutto. Today, Chuck and Michael are owners of Hardy Honey – a business that produces roughly 1,000 pounds of honey a year which is sold throughout the Roanoke Valley.
A man with many passions – during his 50s Michael earned his pilot’s license. On weekends, he enjoyed taking his small Cessna up in the clouds with his youngest daughter, Kelley.
When he wasn’t flying or keeping bees, Michael offered a helping hand to anyone in need. From fixing someone’s air-conditioning in the middle of summer to plowing a neighbor’s driveway after a snowstorm, he was always just a phone call away.
Diagnosed with cancer in March 2015, Michael never complained. He always just wanted to know “what’s next.”
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions to Trinity Ecumenical Parrish in Moneta Virginia.
A memorial service will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 18, 2015 at Trinity Ecumenical Parrish with Pastor Dr. Philip Bouknight officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
