Nealie Young Harris, age 90, passed away at her residence in Rocky Mount, Virginia on Monday, May 16, 2011. Nealie was born in Henry, Virginia on December 15, 1920 to Giles and Nealie Young. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Maureen, in 1967 and former husband, Garland, in 1977. Nealie attended the Virginia School for the Deaf in Staunton, Virginia and was a salutatorian of her 1942 graduating class. She held different clerical positions in the Washington, D.C. area for many years. She retired in 1988. She was very independent, loved country cooking, handicrafts and giving motherly advice to many young deaf adults. Nealie had three children, son, Gordon Mack Harris of Arlington, Texas; daughters, Maureen Ann Harris and Susan Heinbaugh of Ferrum, Virginia; two granddaughters, Rachel Harris of Dripping Springs, Texas and Amanda Heinbaugh of Ferrum, Virginia; two great-grandsons, Maxwell and Jake of Dripping Springs, Texas. Funeral services will be conducted from Flora Funeral Chapel 11 a.m. Thursday with Pastor Terry Covey officiating. Interment will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Virginia School for the Deaf Museum in Staunton, Va. Her family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Flora Funeral Service & Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
