Norma Bowles Robertson, age 91 of Rocky Mount passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, November 30, 2010. She was born on January 10, 1919 to William David and Mary Towles Bowles in Clifton Forge, VA. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Longwood College in 1942 and began her teaching career in Botetourt County, where she met her future husband. In 1952, the family moved to Rocky Mount, Va., where she continued teaching for several years. Mrs. Robertson will be remembered as an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church, where she served as a former member of the church’s vestry and as a Senior Warden. She always believed in saying the blessing before each meal. In addition to her church work, Norma loved traveling, playing bridge and attending Virginia Tech football games with her husband and friends. All her life, she was a very loving and easy to please lady to her family and friends. Mrs. Robertson is survived by her devoted husband of 67 years, Edwin Traylor Robertson; her son, Edwin David Robertson of New York, NY; her grandson, Thomas Therit Robertson of Reston, VA; and her sister, Mary Bowles Hartley of Roanoke. Predeceasing her were two brothers, Thomas Therit Bowles and Dr. Richard Boxley Bowles. The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Robert Strong for his assistance and friendship, and to Nancy Callaway for her friendship and loving care to “Mrs. Norma” for seven years. Funeral services will be conducted from Trinity Episcopal Church 11 a.m. Saturday with Revs. John and Rachel Gardner officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Trinity Episcopal Church, 101 E. Church Street, Rocky Mount, Virginia 24151 or to the Phoebe Needles Center, 732 Turners Creek Road, Callaway, Virginia 24067. Her family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Friday at Flora Funeral Service & Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
