Pauline Cassell Long, (Polly), 93, of Harrisonburg, a native of Franklin County, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 16, 2015 in Rocky Mount. Polly, the daughter of the late Roy B. and Grace Wells Cassell, was predeceased by her loving husband, Robert Samuel Long of Harrisonburg. Polly, a graduate of Ferrum Junior College, went on to receive her Bachelor’s degree from James Madison University, formerly Madison College. After serving as the secretary to the Registrar at James Madison University for 17 years, Polly became the Registrar in 1961. Following 45 years of devoted service to James Madison University, Polly retired in 1989. In 2000, Polly relocated from her beloved home on Dixie Avenue to Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community, where she served as the Park Gables volunteer treasurer for many years. Polly also continued to serve as the volunteer treasurer of Otterbein United Methodist Church, where she was a member for over 50 years. Polly enjoyed collecting glass and china, gardening, playing bridge, traveling, entertaining and most of all doing for others. Polly was a wonderful friend, daughter, sister and aunt to numerous nieces and nephews, helping many members of her family receive their degrees from James Madison. Polly also cherished her role as Godmother to the three sons of lifelong friends, Eugene and Melissa Wolfe; Gary, David and Steve. Polly was predeceased in death by her brothers, Billy and Tommy Cassell, and three sisters, Virginia Lovell, Thelma Palmer and Julia Frith. Polly is survived by her sister-in-laws, Drucille Reynolds Cassell, Bonnie Montgomery Cassell, Emily Long Bruce and Lois Long Driver as well as numerous nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews, godsons and loving friends. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on November 7, 2015 at East Lawn Memorial Gardens in Harrisonburg.
