Phillip Andrew Underwood, 74 of Ferrum, ended his battle with cancer on Wednesday, May 6, 2015. He was born March 28, 1941, a son of the late Lawrence and Myrtle Underwood. He was retired from Ferrum Elementary School with many years of service and was a faithful member of Ebenezer Baptist Church where he served as Deacon. Phillip was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 45 years, Joy Carter Underwood; and brother, Jay Underwood. Surviving are his two sons, David A. Underwood (Sonia) and Earl D. Underwood; grandchildren, Taria (Underwood) Morris, Andrew Underwood and Ashley R. Underwood; three great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Jimmy Underwood (Myrtle), Pat Scruggs, Martha Janney, Monty Underwood, Tim Underwood (Tammy); sister-in-law, Sylvia Underwood; nieces, nephews and many friends. Funeral services will be conducted at Ebenezer Baptist Church 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 8, 2015 with Dr. William Shively officiating. Interment will follow in the Carter Family Cemetery. In addition to flowers, memorials may be made to Ebenezer Baptist Church or to a favorite charity. His family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
