Joan Bennett Latimer and Pierce Butler Latimer III, of Midlothian, VA died on February 15, 2009 and February 18, 2009 after 42 years of devoted marriage.
They were beloved parents, grandparents, friends, and inspiration to the countless people they touched during their lifetime in Virginia and later during their retirement years in Atlantic Beach, NC.
They were preceded in death by Mr. Latimer’s parents, Mallie and Pierce Butler Latimer, Jr. and by Mrs. Latimer’s mother, Mabel Bennett.
Joan was raised in Roanoke, VA, attended Roanoke College and later received her Masters from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. Her career began as a teacher in Roanoke and finished as a high school guidance counselor at James River High School in Midlothian. She loved being an educator and always put her heart and soul into helping students meet their full potential. Pierce (P.B.) was raised in Rocky Mount. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. Pierce attended Ferrum College and VA Tech. He spent his career as a Real Estate Broker and Instructor. He was cofounder and owner of Old Mill Real Estate Company in Richmond. Real Estate was the perfect career for P.B. as it gave him the means to take care of his family and the flexibility to slip away when the fish were biting. Joan and P.B. were happiest surrounded by family and friends and never missed an opportunity to cook for others or to host a party. P.B. loved fishing, telling fishing stories, Hokie sports and playing cards. Joan enjoyed playing tennis, walking the beach, and telling P.B. how to play cards. More than anything in life they treasured time spent with their daughters and six grand children.
They are survived by Mrs. Latimer’s sister Catherine Bennett of McLean, VA; daughter Christy Sandy and husband Steve of Raleigh, NC; daughter Julie Latimer of Raleigh, NC; and many dear cousins, nieces and nephews. “Ya-Ya” and “Pops” will be greatly missed by their six grandchildren Mallie Quin, Pierce Thomas, William Maurice, Grace Kendrick, Nolen Bennett and Megan DeLay.
Joan and P.B. loved animals and had a special place in their hearts for the underdogs in our world. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Southside SPCA, P.O. Box 66, Neherrin, VA 23954; donate online at www.southsidespca.org.
