Pierce Latimer (Sonny) Vaughn, age 88 of Rocky Mount passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 24, 2021. He was born in Marietta, GA moving to Rocky Mount as a young boy when his father and uncle founded MW Distributors. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dewitt Clinton and Evelyn Latimer Vaughn. He is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Shirley Brankley Vaughn; children, Dr. Lindsey Vaughn (Sue) and Debra Vaughn; grandsons, Tyler Vaughn and Riley Vaughn; and sister, Emalyn Vaughn Reed. He attended Sewanee Military School, VA Episcopal School, Reno High School, Reno, NV, graduating from Franklin County High School. He also attended Randolph-Macon College. Sonny was employed at MW Distributors for 23 years in sales and as a Plant Manager. Later in life he was in sales for AFLAC Insurance. Sonny was a faithful and devoted member of Rocky Mount United Methodist Church serving on the Administrative Board and Finance Committee. He was founding and charter member of the first Rescue Squad of Franklin County and a lifetime member of the Franklin County Rescue Squad. He served as Squad Captain and other leadership positions including Board of Directors until his health prohibited. Sonny was active in the community. He was member of the Rotary Club, board member of the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce, Red Cross, lifetime member Junior Chamber of Commerce and Ferrum College Board of Trustees. One of Sonny's most joyful times was when he could be found playing Santa Claus at Christmas at churches in the community and organizations. The family would like to thank the staff at Franklin Health and Rehabilitation for the wonderful care over the last several years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to Rocky Mount United Methodist Church, Ferrum College Vaughn Chapel, Franklin County Rescue Squad. Graveside Services will be held at Franklin Memorial Park 2 p.m. Wednesday with Rev. Bruce Tuttle officiating. Covid protocols (masks) will be followed. Arrangements by Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
