Richard Duane Sorter, age 69 of Moneta was called from his earthly home to his eternal home on Thursday December 31, 2015 after a lengthy stay at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ervin A. Sorter and Eva Borg Sorter; brother, Michael V. Sorter, sister Kathryn K. Sorter and son-in-law, Christopher D. Beach. Left to cherish in his memories are his wife of 36 years, Laurel L. Weeden Sorter, daughter, Karen L. Sorter Beach, son, Richard M. Sorter and daughter-in-law, Laura Sorter. Richard is very proud of his grandchildren Ryan Beach, Noah Sorter and Kayla Bartozek. Richard retired from the US Postal Service, Springfield, Va after almost 40 years of service in 2007. He was a lifetime member of the OWL Woodbridge, Va Volunteer Fire Department. Richard enjoyed the great outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Richard moved with his wife from Northern Virginia in 2007 to enjoy the good life at Smith Mountain Lake. Visitation will be held at 2 p.m. January 5, 2016 at Halesford Baptist Church, Wirtz, Va The funeral services will follow the visitation at 3 p.m. Graveside services will be held at Mountain View Memorial Park on Wednesday, January 6, 2016 at 11 a.m. The family requests memorial gifts may be made in memory of Richard Duane Sorter to: Halesford Baptist Church, 2485 Lost Mountain Road, Wirtz, Va.
