Robert Edward “Ed” Shively, Sr., 76, passed away early Friday morning at his home in Roanoke. He was born in Rocky Mount, Virginia on June 12, 1934 to James Otis Shively and Katherine Blankenship Shively. He was preceded in death by one sister, Anne Shively Webb, and her husband T. Russell Webb. Surviving are his devoted wife of 51 years, Joyce Hall Shively; one son, Robert E. Shively, Jr, and his wife, Annette A. Shively, of Fincastle; two daughters, Jane S. Snyder and her husband, Stuart D. Snyder, of Roanoke, and Julie S. Prater, and her husband, Donald A. Prater, of Blacksburg; grandchildren Jeffrey Alvarez and Zachary Alvarez, of Fincastle, Katie Snyder, Claire Snyder, and Cameron Snyder, of Roanoke, and Katie Prater, Christie Prater, and Julianna Prater, of Blacksburg; one sister, Sarah S. Arthur, and her husband C. Ralph Arthur, of Radford; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Ed was a devoted husband and father, and treasured the time he spent with his family. He was a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and retired from the General Electric Company after a long career. He was a member of the Roanoke Appalachian Trail Club. He spent many years restoring his historic Botetourt County home. He enjoyed building and restoring furniture, and he was a master craftsman. He enjoyed history, and participated in many local Civil War events. Ed also served as a Relay for Life volunteer for more than 15 years. Funeral services will be conducted from Flora Funeral Chapel 11 a.m. Tuesday with Rev. L. Stanley Wright, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Gogginsville Methodist Church, 111 Gogginsville Rd., Rocky Mount, VA 24151, or the American Cancer Society at 2840 Electric Rd., Roanoke, VA 24018. His family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Monday at Flora Funeral Service & Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
