Robert Douglas Lambourne, Lt. Colonel, U.S. Army, Retired of Penhook, Virginia and formerly of McLean, Virginia died Tuesday, August 14, 2007 at the age of 83.
He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, the son of Douglas E. Lambourne and Carrie Adele Smith.
He married Shirley Pearl Herzog, March 19, 1948. A veteran of World War II, he served in combat in Germany receiving a Purple Heart, Bronze Star and a Combat Infantry Badge. Following the war, he returned to the University of Utah graduating with a BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering. Designated an ROTC Distinguished Military Graduate he received a commission in the Army in August 1948. In July 1955, under the Army Civil Schooling Program, he graduated from Georgia Tech, receiving a MS Degree in Electrical Engineering and was assigned to the Army Artillery Center, Target Acquisition Department in Fort Sill. He served as Supervisor of the Sensory Division. Upon leaving Fort Sill, he received the Army Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service. From July 1959 to July 1969 he was assigned to the Joint Military Advisory Group in Thailand as an Artillery advisor. In 1963 he graduated from the Army Command and General Staff College and was assigned to the Army General Staff in the Office of the Chief of Research and Development. In June 1967 he retired from the Army receiving a Legion of Merit for exceptional conduct and outstanding service. Following his Army retirement, he used his expertise and experience as a consultant to the Defense and Energy Departments.
Robert Lambourne is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a strong supporter of the Boy Scouts of America and a member of the American Legion.
In addition to his wife he is also survived by his son, Robert George, his daughter, Diane Holling, his son, Gordon Douglas and daughter, Sheree Willey; ten grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren.
A memorial service celebrating his life will be conducted from the McLean Chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1325 Scott’s Run Road, McLean, Virginia 22102, at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 24, 2007 with Bishop C. William Smith officiating. Interment with Full Military Honors will be conducted at Arlington National Cemetery, 9:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 10, 2007.
Flowers will be accepted and may be delivered to the church on Friday between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. or memorial contributions be made to the Boy Scouts of America c/o National Capital Area Council, BSA 9190 Rockville Pike, Bethesda, MD 20814.
