Robert Allen Varnes, age 46 of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina died Thursday, September 18, 2008.
Rob, as he was known to family and friends, was born August 7, 1962, in Lincoln, Nebraska a son of the late Robert Harry and Mary Ann Pahler Varnes. As a graduate of The University of North Carolina at Charlotte, NC, Rob earned a B.S. Degree in Electrical Engineering in 1987 after which he then earned a Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering from Old Dominion in 1993. He was employed by Scientific Research Corporation in Charleston, SC where he was the Director of Information Technology and Homeland Security. If there is one word that would describe Rob Varnes, it would be the word VIBRANT. He was vibrant about his religion and relationship with God, serving as Chairman of the Board of Deacons at Eastbridge Presbyterian Church at the time of his death. He was vibrant about his love for all in his family, particularly his devoted wife Beth, and three beautiful and talented daughters of whom he was so very proud. Rob was also vibrant about his enjoyment of the great outdoors and travels as seen in his excellent photography work. He truly was a vibrant man and will be sadly missed by his family, friends, and special relatives in Virginia.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Anne (Beth) Bennett Varnes; his three daughters, Catherine A. Varnes, Elizabeth A. Varnes, and Rebecca A. Varnes, all of Mt. Pleasant, SC; two sisters, Patricia Kinnebrew and husband Kevin (their children, Ian and Crystal) of West Palm Beach, FL and Cindy Zarrilli (Tom) of Atlanta, GA; his father and mother-in-law, Dr. A. Wayne and Shirley Bennett of Clemson, SC; his brother-in-law, David Wayne Bennett and Debra Vaughn of Carrollton, VA; and also many relatives in Virginia.
The family received friends from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at J. Henry Stuhr Mount Pleasant Chapel Saturday, September 20, 2008. A celebration of Rob's life was conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, September 21, 2008, from Eastbridge Presbyterian Church in Mt. Pleasant.
Graveside services will be conducted from High Street Cemetery in Rocky Mount, VA 4 p.m. Monday, September 22, 2008.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Robert Varnes' name to the Deacon Benevolence Fund, Eastbridge Presbyterian Church, 3058 Highway 17 North, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29466.
