Roberta Ann Hughes

On Wednesday, October 29, 2025, Roberta Ann Belcher Hughes, 70, of Rocky Mount, Virginia, peacefully transitioned from this life.

Roberta was born on December 24, 1954, in Bassett, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alease Roberta Reid Belcher and Henry Lee Belcher; her siblings Charles Belcher, Henry Belcher Jr., Bernard Belcher, Mae Frances Wedlow, and Nancy Henderson; and her two stepchildren, Karl Hughes and Gail Thomas.

She received her education through the Henry County Public School System and went on to dedicate more than 25 years of service as a certified nursing assistant, a career she began through Blue Ridge Job Corps. Her compassion, strength, and dedication were evident in the care she provided to others.

Roberta was well known for her love of cooking and gardening. Holidays were her favorite time. She joyfully prepared large meals and surprised her family with thoughtful gifts. In her younger years, she lovingly cooked her sisters' favorite dish of fried chicken breast and pinto beans, along with her memorable green cake. Her contagious laughter, radiant smile, and timeless sense of style left a lasting impression on everyone she met. Roberta was also a proud member of Greater Faith Ministries.

She leaves to cherish her memory: her devoted husband of 46 years, William Harvey Hughes; her loving daughter, Shanita Dione Hughes; and her loving son, William Delano Hughes, both of Rocky Mount, Virginia; three stepchildren, Coretta Hughes Hale (Jamie Hale), Chris Hughes (Sandy Hughes), and Leslie Hughes; five brothers, Joshua Belcher (Susanne), Bishop Gerald Belcher (Carolyn), Fredrick Oates, Robert Belcher, and David Belcher; six sisters, Elaine Smith, Lettie Aiken (Tony Aiken), Shirley Cooke, Joyce Burris, Polina Belcher, and Bettie Claytor; and seven beloved grandchildren, Shavante Hughes, Sade' Hughes, Tiarra Nicole Getsi, Harmony Hodges, William Delano Hughes, Jr. De'Angelo Hughes and Vicky Hughes.

Roberta will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Her beautiful spirit, unwavering love, and joyful laughter will forever live on in the hearts of her family and friends.

Funeral Services will be held at Flora Funeral Chapel 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 4, 2025 with Bishop Gerald Belcher presiding. Interment will follow in the Belcher Cemetery. Her family will receive friends thirty minutes prior to the service at Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
