Ronald Bassett Hanawalt was born February 12, 1939 to Nelson and Pearl Bassett Hanawalt of New Brunswick, NJ. In 1962, he married Alice Fowler of Waterbury, CN. To this union was born Heather Hanawalt Barnhart (Mark) and William (Bill) Hanawalt. Ron was a professor at several colleges, teaching Ecology. He then became a Bee Keeper in the 1970’s. After 52 years of marriage to Alice, she passed away in Callaway, VA. After his loss, he then married Mary Bowser Bowman October 31, 2015. They enjoyed eight years together with the last three years fighting the cancer battle. He fought it quietly and gracefully till he passed at home November 13, 2023. He is survived by his loving wife Mary, his two children, Heather Barnhart (Mark) and William Hanawalt (Bill) seven grandchildren, and a sister, Barbara Hanawalt, of Bloomington, IND, six step-children, Andrew Bowman (Sheryl), Rachel Austin (Donnie), Rebecca Brumbaugh (Kevin), Levi Bowman (Ann), Ruth Woody (Scott), and Lois Poland (Chris) along with 37 step-grandchildren and 40 step-great-grandchildren and many special friends. He will be remembered well as the kind hearted, big smiled Honey Bee Man. A special thanks to his team of doctors and nurses, the special care from Franklin County Carilion Hospice. His family will receive friends Thursday, November 16 at 9:00 a.m. with the service to follow at 11:00 a.m. at Mountain View Old German Baptist Brethren Church (249 Dugwell Rd, Boones Mill, VA 24065). Arrangements by Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
