Russell Glenn Beckett, 60 of Rocky Mount passed away Saturday, July 19, 2008 after a long battle with cancer. He is survived by his loving wife, Sue Davis Beckett; one sister, Susan Wilson and brother-in-law Ron Wilson, of Clearwater, Florida; his mother-in-law, Jeannette Davis; two brothers-in-law, Tommy Davis and Mark Davis, all of Rocky Mount; numerous nieces and nephews; close friends, Matthew Stuart and Taylor Farris, Sr., both of Martinsville.
Russ was a 30 year employee of Piedmont Community Services where he served in various administrative and counseling positions which afforded him opportunities to make a difference in people’s lives. He was instrumental in developing programs aimed at fostering a recovery environment for clients with substance abuse issues.
Russ considered himself a native of Virginia, born in Ohio. He felt a love for the people and beauty of this area. Through his dedication and ability to guide people through their introspection, he has indeed made an impact on the lives of the many he has touched. Other attributes Russ is known for are his way of making people feel important and valuable, his quest for and sharing of new knowledge, and a sense of humor that was creative, playful, childlike and quirky. Although sadly missed, a part of Russ will remain with all of us.
Funeral services will be conducted from Flora Funeral Chapel 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 23, 2008 with Pastor Milton Johnson officiating. Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and Wednesday 1:30 p.m. until service at Flora Funeral Service, 665 South Main Street, Rocky Mount.
