Ruth Wright Nichols went to her heavenly home on Saturday, May 4, 2024. In the days leading up to her passing, she received numerous visits and phone calls from family, friends, and neighbors where her sharp wit and sense of humor were still present. What a blessing it was for her daughters, Sue and Trish, to witness such an outpouring of love. Ruth had 3 grandchildren who each had a special place in her heart. Alex Angell, her first grandson, who called her granny, was her partner in crime and is the holder of many secrets. In later years he served as her most faithful and loving caregiver. Callie Angle Giaccio, her only granddaughter, loved tea parties as a little girl and named her Sue Granny when she started talking. And as an adult, Callie loved to talk about their favorite television programs and tell her Sue Granny about the students in her class. Her youngest grandson, Zachary Angle, was her ‘baby’ when he was little and her race talking buddy as an adult. She loved to hear Zach sing and always wanted to hear where he was playing music. She loved Tony, Callie’s husband and welcomed him into her family with open arms as her new grandson. Ruth loved playing games and made some amazing memories full of laughter that her children and grandchildren will carry with them forever. Ruth had 7 nieces and 1 nephew, and numerous great nieces and nephews, that she loved dearly. Each of them, including their spouses, had a special place in her heart. They called and visited her often. She always tried to send them cards on their birthdays to make them feel special. She loved seeing pictures of their children and grandchildren. Ruth was one of 5 children of the late Bluford and Della Wright. She never got over the passing, way too soon of her brother Warren Wright and sisters Louise Richardson and Marie Hudson. What a joy it was to hear her tell stories of their life growing up in Ferrum. Her youngest brother B. W. Wright Jr., often treated her to her favorite Wendy’s meal and had long talks with her in her later years. In fact in one of their last talks he told her favorite race NASCAR driver got the poll which brought a special twinkle to her eye. Ruth never felt anyone was an in-law and shared a special bond with her two ‘sisters’ Brenda Wright and Shirley Wright. They talked often and went on numerous shopping trips and lunch dates. They were each other's confidants and her ‘brothers’ the late Jay Lee Hudson and Lane Richardson often brought Ruth items from their gardens and were a great support to her throughout their lives. Sue’s husband became Ruth’s son when he started dating Sue when he was just 16 years old. Bruce and Ruth shared a very unique relationship and she grieved his passing every day. Trish’s husband Scott loved to talk politics and the state of the world with Ruth and to make her favorite pie. Bruce and Scott included Ruth on numerous family trips and outings. Ruth worked at Bassett Furniture in the Main Office for 45 years. She made many long-lasting friendships while there. Ruth was an avid gardener and loved tending her roses and numerous other flowers. When she could no longer get in her yard, Alex became her hands as she gave him directions from the porch or window and passed on her green thumb advice. Ruth loved taking pictures and telling life stories and she passed this hobby onto her daughter Trish. Ruth and her oldest daughter Sue loved basketball and spent many hours together watching major league basketball games and sharing a cup of coffee. Ruth was a long time member of Maple Grove Methodist Church. She sang in the choir for years and loved laughing and worshiping her savior with the other members. Ruth also was an active member of the WMU and enjoyed the fellowship she shared with all of these ladies. The church members supported her with gifts, calls, and visits when her health prevented her from attending services. Also, Ruth was a member of the Red Hats. She loved showing pictures of their adventures with her family. Above all else, Ruth was a woman of God and a survivor. She was an amazing mother raising and providing for her daughters by herself from an early age. Ruth beat cancer four times. She leaves a lasting legacy of faith and love to her family and friends. Special thanks to her two very special neighbors Debbie Hall and Keith Inman who she watched grow up and who helped her out in later years; special friends Marie, Alease, Carolyn, and Pauline; long time friend and hair stylist Lajuan Hodges; caregivers Loretta and Sissy and the Carilion Roanoke Memorial nurses, techs, and doctors on floors 8 and 10 who made her last months and days as comfortable as possible. Funeral services will be 12 noon, at Maple Grove United Methodist Church on Friday, May 10, 2024 with the visitation starting at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers please make donations to Maple Grove Methodist Church, P. O. Box 237, Ferrum, Va 24088, Attention: Debbie Scott. Arrangements by Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
