S. Basil Underwood

S. Basil Underwood, age 89, of Ferrum, departed from this life on Saturday, December 15, 2012 into his heavenly rest following a long illness. Basil was a United States Army World War II veteran and he served his community well. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Lee and Annie Thompson Underwood; his loving wife, Eva Boyd Underwood; one son, Arnold Underwood; one grandson, Billy Jack (BJ) Clingenpeel; sister, Mary Quinn and a brother, Loyd Underwood. Surviving are his children, Jeanette Ratliff (JC) of Collinsville, Danny R. Underwood (Joyce) of Ferrum, Judy Clingenpeel (Jack) and Michael Underwood both of Ferrum; grandchildren, Patricia Atkins, Shelia Grant, Scott Underwood, Lee Underwood, Jason Underwood, Tina Bowman, and Jennifer Brown; 17 great-grandchildren; one special great-great-grandchild, Caiden; two brothers, Denver Adkins and Elmer Adkins; special friend, Nichole Radford. The family would like to express their appreciation to his special care givers, Tricia Goodman, Nadine Cruz, Rachael Adkins, Jill Altice, Dr Thomas Eldridge, his life long physician and The Palliative Care unit at Salem Veteran Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted from Flora Funeral Chapel 11 a.m. Tuesday with Pastor Travis Gore and Pastor Roger Jones officiating. Interment will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery. His family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Flora Funeral Service & Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
