Samuel Clay Oakes

Samuel Clay “Sammy” Oakes, age 76 of Penhook passed away Thursday, January 21, 2010. Mr. Oakes was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a long-time, active member of Museville Christian Church. Sammy was born July 22, 1933 in Pittsylvania County, a son of the late James Henry and Nora Mattox Oakes. He was also preceded in death by a brother Bennett Oakes and sister Doris Grizzel. Surviving are his wife of 57 years Lena Oakes; children, Steven Oakes (Daphne), Ricky Oakes (Cynthia), Gayle Causey (Mike), Lisa Reynolds (Keith); grandchildren, Clay, Evelyn, Eric, Elizabeth, Ethan, Brett and Landon; great-grandchildren, Ivy, McKenzie and Skyler; brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Elise Oakes, Edward and Irene Oakes; sisters, Ruby Carter, Ann Stegall and Clarice Oakes; sister-in-law, Octavia Oakes; a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted from Museville Christian Church 11:00 a.m. Monday with Ministers Ted Clifton and Rusty Owens officiating. Interment to follow in the Church Cemetery.
