Selma “Duck” Akers, age 84 of Rocky Mount, Virginia died Thursday, June 11, 2026. He was born November 29, 1941 to Eugene Wolton Akers and Louise Sowder Akers. He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Brenda A. Akers; his grandson, Braeton B. Hagy; his brother, Eugene W. Akers; and his sister, Nancy L. Rhodes.
He is survived by his daughters, Susan Hodges (Duane), Robin Wunderlich (Dana) and Karen Hagy (Larry). Also surviving are his grandchildren, Zachary Hodges, Caitlin Abelseth (Jacob), Megan Wunderlich (Justin), Tyler Wunderlich, and Caroline Hagy. He was blessed to have loved six great-grandchildren, Cadence, Fender, Ronen, Ava, and Ella Abelseth and Tillie Mae Witcher.
Duck was born and raised in Rocky Mount and met Brenda in high school. The sweethearts married in 1961 and spent 59 years loving each other, raising their girls and serving their community, family, and friends with their time and talents. They loved to travel and visited all 49 continental United States. Riding their motor cycle brought them great joy and they made many friends during their travels.
He is often remembered for coaching baseball and softball, operating a tree topping service with his dear friend Floyd Anderson, and owning and operating Exchange Milling. He was a longtime member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church and was known for his beautiful baritone voice.
Many looked to him as the patriarch of the Sydnorsville Community as he was always willing to volunteer, lead, and help with any need that came his way. His memory will live on in those who loved and respected him.

Memorial services will be conducted from Bethlehem United Methodist Church 2 p.m. Saturday, June 13, 2026 with Rev. Chris Bennett and Pastor David McEntire officiating. His family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements by Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
