Shelby Davis Garrett Dix, age 88 of Rocky Mount, Virginia passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 29, 2025 at Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital. She was a true Coal Miner’s daughter of the late Daniel Edgar Davis Sr. and the late Wilma Lawson Davis. She was predeceased by her husbands, Edmond K. Garrett, Jr., and Claris Brooks Dix, Jr. She was also predeceased by her sister, Joann Davis Jones. Shelby grew up in Coeburn, Virginia and graduated from Pulaski School of Nursing. For 29 years she was the Director of Nursing at Franklin Memorial Hospital. It was fitting she passed at the place she worked and loved so much. She was a member of Rocky Mount Baptist Church.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Phillip Edmond Garrett (Donna) of Forest, Virginia and Rhonda Garrett Winters (David) of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; grandchildren, Danielle Garrett Weko (Drew), Jessica Jean Turner, Alyce Gentry Fogel (Joe); great-grandchildren, Leighton Fogel and Emery Fogel; brother, Daniel Edgar Davis, Jr. (Shelia); sister, Gail Davis Nixon; brother-in-law, Roger Garrett (Mary); numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to acknowledge and are grateful for two special friends, Jo Houston and Karla Pagans who were so helpful to Shelby the last few years.
Shelby was a dynamic force to her Family, Community, State, and Country. Shelby and Ed moved eight times in the first seven years of their marriage before landing in Rocky Mount in 1967. From Scuffling Hill to Franklin Heights and finally South Main Street, Rocky Mount became home. She was able to do some traveling and loved trips to Alaska with her parents and to Europe with her sister, daughter, and granddaughters. She was an avid Virginia Tech Hokie, having attended games since the 1950’s and the week before she passed.

Funeral services will be held at Flora Funeral Chapel, 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 6, 2025. Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park. Her family will receive friends beginning at 9:30 a.m. Saturday prior to the service. Arrangements by Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
