Shelby Lee Handy Green, 71, passed away on Thursday, April 5, 2012 at home after a five year battle with endometrial cancer.
She was preceded in death by her parents Ira and Lottie Handy; brothers Donald Handy and Glenn Handy. Shelby was born on May 28, 1940 in Danville, VA. She spent her early years in Ferrum, VA and graduated from Franklin County High School. After high school she attended stewardess school in Kansas City but never practiced this profession. She moved to Washington, DC where she met the love of her life, Andrew Green, and married him. They moved to Rockville, MD before retiring to Mooresville, NC in 2006. Through the years she continued her education and worked in the accounting departments of Microwave Cooking and Solarex.
Shelby had a love of reading and especially of mysteries. She loved to work in the yard and had a green thumb with anything she touched. She had a love for stock car racing and enjoyed cheering for her brother and son-in-law. She spent many hours volunteering at her children’s schools and as a Campfire Girl leader. Even through her illness she continued to attend as many of her grandchildren’s events as she was able. She loved to sew and was always making clothing, dance costumes, Halloween costumes and anything else required for the entire family. Survivors include her husband, Andrew Green; her children Julie Markham and husband Curtis (Mooresville, NC), Steven Green and wife Coelian (McHenry, MD); grandchildren Thomas Markham, David Markham, Elizabeth Green and Jacob Green; brothers I. Cecil Handy and wife Elaine (Riner, VA), and Kenneth Handy and wife Linda (Callaway, VA). A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, April 7 in the Cooper Family Cemetery with Rev. Emory Tarpley officiating. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to either Hospice & Palliative Care Lake Norman, 705 Griffith Street, Suite 203, Davidson, NC 28036 or Mooresville Soup Kitchen, PO Box 5173, Mooresville, NC 28117.
