The world lost a very great man. Sherwood Lawrence Hunt, age 87 of Rocky Mount departed this life on Sunday, December 15, 2013. He died, as he lived, with extraordinary dignity. His two sons, Bobby and Mike, and his niece, Carolyn Furrow, were at his side. He was born on October 3, 1926. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Ruby Hodges Hunt. They were married on July 4, 1948 in Chesterfield, SC. He missed her everyday since she departed this life on May 5, 2005. He was also preceded in death by his mother Ella Cundiff Hunt and his father, John Edward Hunt. He is survived by his sons, Bobby Wayne Hunt of Louisville, KY and Michael Lawrence Hunt of Rocky Mount; three grandchildren, Jerald Hunt, Brian Hunt of Bedford and Susan Hunt of St. Petersburg, FL; his special niece, Carolyn H. Furrow; and many other nieces and nephews. Sherwood served in the United States Navy as a Seaman First Class V6. He was in the Island Command, Guam on a USS YP 518. He served in the South Pacific during World War II and received the American Area: Victory World War II: Asiatic-Pacific Medal. He was a long-time member of Furnace Creek Baptist Church where he sang in the choir, taught Sunday school and was a Deacon. The family would like to thank the Doctors and Staff at Franklin Memorial Emergency Room and Lewis Gale Hospital on 3 West, and 5 West, especially Dr. Seibert, Dr. Currie and Dr. Misra. His funeral service will be held at Flora Funeral Chapel on Tuesday, December 17, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. with visitation one hour prior to the service. He will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife at the cemetery at Furnace Creek Baptist Church.
