Shirley Nichols David, 69, of Penhook, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 23, 2022. She left this world peacefully, at home, surrounded by her family. Shirley was born July 6, 1952 to the late Frank and Lucy Rakes Nichols. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her father-in-law, Lowell David, Sr., brother-in-law, Cale David, sister-in-law, Sherry Jones, and three nephews, Timmy Nichols, Matthew Nichols, and Zachary Parsons.
It brought Shirley so much joy to take care of others, whether they were family, friends, or the customers that knew and loved her at the Whistle Stop in Union Hall, where she worked for 21 years. Over the years, she has worn many hats and taken on many roles. At times, she could be seen out-working the men in the tobacco fields on the David farm, mowing the lawn, or changing the oil in her own car. She was also an excellent cook, skilled seamstress, creative wedding planner and caterer, floral designer, and a lover of animals…particularly her special dog, Sparky. More importantly, she was a loving wife, doting mother and grandmother, and a faithful sister and friend.
Shirley will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Lowell (Tommy) David II, daughter and son-in-law, Doug and Dena Custer, and granddaughter, Caley Custer. Also surviving are her mother-in-law, Sylvia David, brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Sheila Nichols, sisters and brothers-in-law, Gary and Bonnie Hall, Dillard and Iris Akers, and sister, Patty Nichols. In addition, she is survived by several nieces and nephews and their children: Brandon and Chelsea Nichols, Joey and Mandie Hale, Chase and Shanna Law, Zoe Parsons, Justin and Bethany David, and Andrew and Kayla Brooks.
Shirley’s family will receive friends beginning at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, February 27, 2022 in Flora Funeral Chapel at Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount, with funeral services beginning at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Mark Stugelmeyer officiating. Interment will follow at the David Family Cemetery in Penhook.
The family is so very appreciative of the nurses from Good Samaritan Hospice and their wonderful care of Shirley and support for Tommy during the last few days. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in memory of Shirley David to Good Samaritan Hospice of Roanoke, VA.
