Shirley Sloan Thompson, age 81, of Rocky Mount departed this life on January 31, 2017 to be with her Savior and heavenly family. She is preceded in death by her parents, Ellis and Minnie Sloan, her husband of 58 years, M. Winfred Thompson and grandson, Tony Furrow. Shirley is survived by her loving family, Patricia and Theo Furrow; Linda and Gary Flora; Sharon and Thomas Young; Rebecca and Phillip Young, Alexander Young, Samantha Young, Bailey Furrow, Brooke Young, Seth Young and Jacob Young. She is also survived by in-laws, Christine and T.C. Ramsey, Millie Thompson, Loraine and Wayne Pagans, Joyce and Harold Bernard and Bobby and Glenda Thompson. Shirley had many wonderful nieces, nephews and special friends. Shirley was a faithful member of The Evangelistic House of Prayer. She was employed by Ferrum Elementary Cafeteria for 25 years cooking for all her precious children. Shirley loved making others smile and most of all loved being a wonderful, caring "Nana" to her grandchildren. The family would like to extend their gratitude to Dr. John Boone for his kindness and care given to Mom during the years and to Gentle Shepherd Hospice. Funeral services will be held at Flora Funeral Chapel 3:00 p.m. Thursday with Reverend Bud Nichols officiating. Interment will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
