Stella Joyce “Joy” Carter Underwood, age 62 of Ferrum, went to be with the Lord after a courageous battle with cancer Sunday, August 10, 2008.
She was born November 26, 1945 a daughter of the late Ralph and Roxie Carter. She was also preceded in death by one brother, Kenneth Carter; one sister, Reba Mabry; and one grandson, Jeremy Underwood.
Joy was an active member of Ebenezer Baptist Church and was an employee of Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital in Environmental Services until November 2006.
She is survived by her loving husband of 45 years (on July 19th), Phillip Andrew Underwood; two sons, David Andrew and wife Sonia Underwood, Earl Douglas Underwood; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, Jesse and Edna Carter of Martinsville, Aaron Carter of Ferrum; seven sisters, Ellen Barbour of Rocky Mount, Betty and C.L. Adkins of Ferrum, Margaret Jones of Rocky Mount, Clara Carter of Sanville, Faye Peters of Ferrum, Janie and Lane Belcher of Ferrum; numerous nieces and nephews; special friends, Roger and Jane Hodges.
Funeral services will be conducted from Ebenezer Baptist Church 2 p.m. Tuesday with Dr. William Shively officiating. Interment will follow in the Carter Family Cemetery.
In addition to flowers, memorials may be made to Ebenezer Baptist Church or to a favorite charity.
Her family will be receiving friends from 6-9 p.m. Monday at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 2536 Six Mile Post Road, Callaway, Va. 24067.
