Thelma Mae Preston

Thelma passed away on June 14, 2023, at the age of 87. She was Born on March 15, 1936, to the late Curtis Casey, Sr., and Vera Preston. Thelma was the first and oldest living grandchild of Robert and Pokey Casey. Thelma is preceded in death by her brothers, Raymond Preston, Curtis Casey, Jr., and sister Eunice Casey, husband, Morton Preston, and lifelong partner, Jessie Ross. Thelma is survived by two sisters, Maxine Casey of Pittsburgh, PA and Janice Casey of Leesburg, Florida. She also leaves a cousin and long-term caregiver Judea “Penny” Williams of Rocky Mount, VA; special cousins and friends: John Henry Mattox of the home, Marie Knight of Littleton, NC, Lonnie Mattox of Pittsburg, PA, Jerry Mattox, Annie Townes, and Bessie Cook of Franklin County, VA. While Thelma did not have children of her own, she had three girls she loved as if they were hers, Ericka Cook of Eden, NC, Tamara Simmons of Rocky Mount, and Christa Poindexter of Charlottesville, VA. Thelma was a faithful member of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church and served on the kitchen committee. Thelma loved to travel and enjoyed many road trips visiting casinos. She was always up for any family-centered adventures. She loved entertaining, often hosting big dinners for family and friends both near and far. Thelma was sure to bring her cover dish to any function and was known for her homemade peach cobbler and lima beans. Thelma worked a long career and in turn enjoyed her retirement. She enjoyed harvesting and putting up fresh fruits and vegetables with her dearly loved cousins Eassie Taylor, Vivian Reynolds, and Margie Jean Simmons. Thelma leaves a host of many other family and friends. She will be dearly missed. The family of Thelma Preston would like to express sincere appreciation to our family and friends who extended expressions of sympathy during this time of bereavement. Funeral services will be held at Flora Funeral Chapel, 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 24, 2023. Interment will follow in the Casey Family Cemetery. Her family will receive friends beginning at 10:30 a.m. prior to the service. In lieu of flowers and donations, please consider donating to Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church or the American Breast Cancer Foundation in her memory.
