Thomas Alfred Hartley, age 93 of Rocky Mount, departed his earthly life on Monday, June 24, 2013 and joined his wife, Irene Johnson Hartley, who preceded him in death. Mr. Hartley is survived by his sister, Dorothy Townsend, of Linville, NC, his son, Richard Hartley and daughter-in-law Rebecca Stormer, and two granddaughters, Amanda Stormer Hartley and Hillary Stormer Hartley. Mr. Hartley was also blessed with a large extended family. Mr. Hartley was a veteran of the United States Navy, and served in WWII on the battleship U.S.S. Wisconsin. He was an educator in Virginia?s public schools for 37 years, and served the citizens and children of Franklin County as Director of Instruction and Assistant Superintendent of Public Schools for the final 23 years of his career. Service to others and loyalty to family were among Mr. Hartley?s many personal virtues. He was a member of Rocky Mount United Methodist Church for over 50 years. Mr. Hartley was a member of Gideon?s International for many years and gave tirelessly to this organization. Mr. Hartley was an avid golfer and played the game much of his life. The enjoyment he gained from golf and from his association with golfing friends was immense. Funeral services will be conducted from Flora Funeral Chapel 2 p.m. Thursday with Rev. Bruce D. Tuttle officiating. Interment will be private at Franklin Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be gifted to Gideon?s International, P.O. Box 915, Rocky Mount, Virginia 24151. His family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Thursday at Flora Funeral Service & Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
