Thomas Dale Simmons

Thomas Dale Simmons, age 91 of Rocky Mount, passed away on August 29, 2021 at Roanoke Carilion Hospital. He was born August 22, 1930 in Guilford County, NC to John Taylor and Mary Eva Simmons, the fifth of six children. Tom married Betty Jane Viar on December 20, 1953 in Martinsville, VA. To this union, two beautiful daughters were born. The family eventually settled in Rocky Mount, VA where Tom taught in the Franklin County Public Schools as well as working in other business ventures.

Tom graduated from both Mars Hill and Wake Forest and stayed in touch with classmates throughout the decades. He served in the Air Force and trained as a navigator. He was a long time member of Franklin Heights Church and served in various leadership capacities. He never met a stranger as he was always quick with a handshake and a smile. He was an avid supporter of Franklin County athletics and loved to attend their sporting events.

Tom is survived by his wife Betty, daughters Betsy (John) Ritter of Norwich, CT and Teri (Rob) Harris of Gainesville, VA, grandchildren Wendy (Greg) Bailey, Michael Ritter, Zach Harris and Sam Harris and two great-grandchildren Lily and Cole. Also, survived by his devoted "adopted" sons, Clyde Smith and Tim Fitzgerald. The family would like to extend special thanks to caregiver Jessica Stout whose steadfast devotion and care was provided to both Tom and Betty for the past several years.
