Tommy Ray Clayton, Sr., age 73 of Rocky Mount died Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at his home. He was born December 31, 1937 a son of the late William and Ruby Semones Clayton. He was also preceded in death by his four sisters, Alice, Margie, Jean, and Rosie; and three brothers, Sammy, James, and Albert Lee. Tommy graduated from Big Creek High School in War, West Virginia and was a United States Navy Veteran serving during the Korean Conflict. He was also a member of Franklin Heights Baptist Church, Past Master of Melrose Lodge #139 A.F. & A.M., and Past Worthy Patron of Hillcrest Chapter Order of the Eastern Star. He also was a member of the International Union Elevator Constructors Local #51. Tommy was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, and faithful friend to all he met. Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Effie Arlene Clayton; daughter and son-in-law, Bobbie Jo and Monty Williams; son, Tommy Ray Clayton, Jr.; grandchildren, Jamie, Tommy, and Brittany Arlene Williams and James Raines; great-grandson, Blake Clayton Raines; four brothers, Bill (Shirley), Johnny, Abe (Billie), Denny (Charlene); many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Memorial services will be conducted from Flora Funeral Chapel 2 p.m. Saturday with Dr. Stan Parris and Rev. Mark Griffith officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Carilion Hospice of Franklin County, 390 South Main Street, Rocky Mount, Virginia 24151. His family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Saturday at Flora Funeral Service & Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
