Listen to Obituary

Thomas White Davis, 63, was called to his eternal home by our dear Lord on August 6 th . Tommy is preceded in death by his adoring parents, Joseph Turner Davis, Sr. and Jeannette Stringer Davis, and two brothers, Joseph T. Davis Jr. and Donald Allen Davis. Tommy is survived by his sister Rebecca Sue (Davis) Beckett and his brother John Mark Davis, both of Rocky Mount; nieces Laura Myers, Jenny Booth, Martha Langley, and Angela Cayse; nephews Joseph Davis III, Jared Davis, David Davis, and Joey Allen Davis; 17 great nephews and great nieces. Tommy leaves a legacy of love and sweet memories with the many whom his life touched. Some will remember him as the fellow who walked around town with his dog in tow. Others will recall the little boy who caught bees and Japanese hornets. The CBers will recall all the Christmas carols he sang each year—starting in September! Those who wore a uniform will remember him saluting them. If Tommy thought you could speak Spanish, you’ll remember him trying his few phrases on you. But probably the people who will remember him best are those who work at the hospital. For years Tommy visited the nurses (his “girl friends”) and later spread his love and friendship to just about everybody there. He loved to eat with his friends in the cafeteria where he was shown such warm hospitality. But regardless of how you knew Tommy, you’ll remember his smiling face, his outstretched hand, and his greeting of “hey, man!” or “hello, darling”, depending on your gender. The concept of a “stranger” was foreign to Tommy. Tommy was a member of Rocky Mount Baptist Church for most of his life where he served as an usher and helped with the shoe box ministry. Tommy was an honorary member of the Rocky Mount Volunteer Fire Department for over 33 years. His life was enriched beyond words by the fellowship and comraderie he shared with his firemen buddies and their families. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to the fire department. Tommy displayed a sweet, loving, carefree, resilient and happy demeanor—regardless of his trials. He loved his Lord, his family, his church, his firemen buddies, and his hospital friends. The family extends its deepest appreciation to the many who helped him and loved him through the trying times he had these last few years. Words cannot express what you meant to Tommy any more than this newspaper can contain the names of all those who he impacted. Tommy’s last words to you would be, “Come see me!” He is now in heaven with Jesus. And anyone who has accepted Jesus Christ as his/her Lord and Savior will some day see Tommy again. Funeral services will be conducted from Rocky Mount Baptist Church 11 a.m. Thursday with Rev. David Slayton officiating. Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park. His family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
