A Patriot Believed It… A Veteran Lived It. Today We Honor Your Dedication to Freedom… Today We Salute You ! An 18 year-old farm boy volunteered to fight for freedom in a foreign country miles from his homeland. He served in the U.S. Army from 1939 until 1945 and reached the rank of Sergeant. During his tour he was captured and held as a P.O.W. for seven months by the German Army. After returning home, he went to work for the U.S. Postal Service where he served as Postmaster of Boones Mill for 35 years. Tounes Thomas Dunahoo quietly drifted into heavenly sleep at the age of 90 surrounded by his loved ones. He was the eldest son of the late Neely Jacob and Ollie Abshire Dunahoo. Those there to greet him in heaven are his parents; a brother, Harold Dunahoo; and a brother-in-law, Wallace Kinsey. Those left to mourn his passing are his loving wife of 56 years, Anna Jean Richey Dunahoo; caregivers; daughter Sharon Smith; son, Malcolm Dunahoo of the home. Grandson, Jacob Thomas Dunahoo; great-granddaughter, Madyline Dunahoo; step-granddaughters Raven Smith, Ashley Morris, Angelie Campbell; step-great-grandchildren, Stephen Morris, and Madison, Jonathan, Emma Lee Campbell; sisters Melva King and Mildred Kinsey; sister-in-law, Goldie Dunahoo; very special friend, Wesley Wright; and many nieces and nephews. Tounes was a lifetime member of the Boones Mill Church of the Brethren. In place of flowers the family suggests donations be made in his memory to the Alzheimer’s Association, Central and Western Virginia Chapter, 1160 Pepsi Place, Suite 306, Charlottesville, Virginia 22901 or Veterans Admininistration, Salem, Va. Special thanks to the Salem VA Home Health, Carilion Hospice of Franklin County and Team Nurse of Rocky Mount. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Sunday July 24, 2011 at Flora Funeral Chapel with Pastor Robert Miller and Rev. Jimmy Robinson officiating.
