Valeria Powell, 92, passed away peacefully on February 26, 2025, surrounded by her loving daughters. Born on April 23, 1932, she was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Valeria was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Roscoe Powell; her mother, Carrie Michaels; and her brothers, Hugh Luck Clements and Elrie Clements.
She is survived by her daughters, Sarah Powell (Jacob) and Melissa Werger (Ken); her grandsons, Jonathan and Nicholas Werger; two step-grandchildren, Neil Christian and Nisha Brunson (Stephen); and a special grand-step-niece, Chahna "Jill" Mecwan.
A lifelong member of Pleasant Hill Church, Valeria dedicated many years to serving in her church community. From her childhood to her later years, her faith and love for God remained central to her life, deeply influencing her children and grandchildren. Valeria’s love was unconditional and unwavering, and she cherished her family, particularly her grandsons, Jonathan and Nicholas, with whom she had a very special bond. Her strength, determination, and devotion were evident to all who knew her, often surprising others due to her small stature.
Valeria worked for over 30 years at Virginia Apparel Corporation before its closure, where she formed lasting friendships and became part of a special work family. She also formed special bonds with several co-workers when working at Uttermost.
A service celebrating Valeria’s life will be held on Saturday, March 8, 2025, at 11 a.m. at Pleasant Hill Church, 2717 Ruritan Road, Rocky Mount, VA. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will greet friends and family beginning at 10 a.m., one hour before the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pleasant Hill Church.
