Vestel Thomas, age 89 of Rocky Mount went to be with the Lord Saturday, March 15, 2008.
He was born December 7, 1918 a son of the late Otho and Eula Mae Rakes Thomas.
Mr. Thomas worked at Blue Ridge Talc and retired from Stanley Furniture. He was a member of Furnace Creek Baptist Church where he enjoyed his Sunday school class and participation with the seniors group. He also loved gardening and his walks around the neighborhood.
In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his first wife, Louella Stone Thomas; his second wife, Cozie English Thomas; son, Larry Thomas; great-granddaughter, Emma Ausburne; and his step great-grandson, Calvert Naff.
Surviving are his children and their spouses, Barbara and J.D. Tatum, Frances and Junior Naff, Henry, Kay and Jimmy Williams, Ferrum, Carol and Chester Garlick, Henry, Pat and Mike Turner, Ferrum, Steve and Kaye Thomas, Henry; ten grandchildren; two step grandsons; nine great-grandchildren; five step great-grandchildren; brother & sister-in-law, Buren & Jean Thomas; sisters, Lorene Hale, Henry and Hazel Ingram, Axton; special friend, Joyce Nelson.
A special appreciation is extended to Dr. Barrett and the surgical team and staff of Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be conducted from Furnace Creek Baptist Church 2 p.m. Tuesday with Rev. Mike Lawhorn and Rev. Tom Teems officiating. Interment will follow in the Mill Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Furnace Creek Baptist Church, 975 Scuffling Hill Road, Rocky Mount, VA 24151 or Gideons International, P.O. Box 915, Rocky Mount, VA 24151.
The family will receive friends Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Furnace Creek Baptist Church.
