Virgie Lee McCrickard Oakes, age 99 of Rocky Mount passed away Sunday, April 15, 2012. She was born July 10, 1912 in the Snow Creek Community. She was preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin H. and Bettie Lee Oakes McCrickard; her husband, Dan Oakes; daughter, Bernice Scott Culler; great-grandson, Jeffery Ray Purcell; one sister, Mamie M. Overstreet; two brothers, Jesse and Tommy McCrickard. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, quilting, and the game shows on TV. She was an active member of the Snow Creek Christian Church. After the death of her husband she moved to Rocky Mount and for the past 21 years lived with her daughter. She is survived by her daughter, Edith O. (Maynard) Prillaman of Rocky Mount; sons, Julian E. (Elizabeth B.) Oakes and Muncie R. (Patricia L.) Oakes all of Martinsville; seven grandchildren, Ricky (Sharon G.) Scott, Teresa O. (Don) Purcell, Leon (Denise T.) Prillaman, Darell (Robin T.) Oakes, Rosemary O. (Steve) Schroyer, Edward (Melissa R.) Oakes, and Jeannie Prillaman; eight great-grandchildren, Kara Scott and fiancée, Joshua Lucus, Korre Scott, Jonathan Oakes, Brenna Purcell, Joshua and Alexandria Prillaman, Laura Schroyer, and Hollace Oakes; one brother and sister-in-law, David and Thelma McCrickard of Roanoke, numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, and special friends. The family would like to thank Sally Martin and the girls at Faith Home for the care mom received the last five months. Funeral Services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at Snow Creek Christian Church with the Rev. Jim Compton officiating. Interment will follow in the Snow Creek Memorial Gardens. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the Snow Creek Christian Church Projection Fund, 4970 Snow Creek Road, Martinsville, Virginia 24112. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Flora Funeral Service & Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
