Walter P. Kingery, Jr., age 85, of Rocky Mount died peacefully at home on Thursday, June 15, 2017. He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Diane Jamison Kingery, his parents, Walter P. and Mary Hudson Kingery, Sr., brothers William Kingery, Sr . (Catherine), Charles Kingery (Naomi), sisters Adeline Moore (Chester), Emma Renick (Bill), and Mildred Kingery.

He is survived by his daughters, Marsha Chitwood (Dewey), Rev. Charlotte Evans (Joseph), Leslieanne Kingery, and Sheryl Kingery Mays (Peter Ordonez); and foster son, Jeff Meador (Phyllis). He is survived by his grandchildren, Alison Hahs (Jonathan), Kristen McGilliard (Josh); great-grandchildren, Madison and Maeleigh Hahs, and Connor and Emma Claire McGilliard. He is also survived by sisters-in-law, Catherine Kingery and Claudette Thompson (Dillard) and brothers-in-law, Dr. James Jamison (Pat) and Lewis Jamison.

Walter's love of family and farm was exemplified in the way he lived his life. He was born on Kin-Vale Farm and worked alongside his father, brother, and nephew raising Holsteins.

Walter and Diane received the Outstanding Young Farm Family of Southside Virginia award in 1958.

Throughout his life, he immersed himself in the dairy business serving in leadership roles with the Virginia Holstein Association, Franklin

County Farm Bureau, Young Farmers Association of Rocky Mount, Franklin County Milk Producers Association, and Virginia Artificial Breeding Association which became Select Sires. He served on the board of Select Sires for more than 20 years and was President of Virginia North Carolina Select Sires Association during 1970s.

His love of new business pursuits lead him to invest in real estate, starting with construction of an apartment building in 1969. In 1974, he was one of the original organizing directors for the First National Bank of Rocky Mount (now Carter Bank & Trust) and served on its Board of Directors for 40 years.

Walter was a long-time member of Sandy Ridge Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, Scoutmaster of the church’s Boy Scout troop, and sang in the choir for more than forty years.

Walter was a wonderful father, grandfather, brother, and uncle whose kindness, gentle nature, and joyful spirit will be missed.

In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial contributions to Sandy Ridge Baptist Church, 1444 Bonbrook Mill Road, Rocky Mount, Va. 24151 designated to the building fund, or to a charity of your choice. Visitation will be at Sandy Ridge Baptist Church on Sunday, June 18th from 5 to 7 p.m. The Memorial Service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, June 19th at the Sandy Ridge Baptist Church. Arrangements by Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
