Walter Lee Powell, Jr.

Walter Lee Powell, Jr. 93, of Rocky Mount, VA, went to dwell with the Lord in his heavenly home on Monday, July 04, 2016. He was preceded in death by two wives, Serena Hancock Powell and Juanita Prillaman Powell; a son, Michael Powell; and a daughter, Ethel Irene Powell; his mother and father, Walter and Ethel Mae Powell; four sisters, Florence Altice, Catherine Law, Elsie Wiggington, and Jeanetta Prillaman. He is survived by five children and their spouses, Deadra and John Gruver, Jr., James and Sandra Powell, David and Cheryl Powell, Nita Powell, Chris and Lisa Powell; nine grandchildren, Karen Gruver, Cheryl Gruver, Michelle and Andy Freeland, Patricia Kone, Jamie and Darrell Scott, Doug Powell and fiancé Becca Chrimes, Michael Sink, Christy and Terry Wright, Devin Powell; 10 great-grandchildren, Brandon Gruver, Serena, John, Grace, and Karalyn Freeland, Kalie Kone, Kaitlyn Powell, Kasey Mae Sink, Cheyenne Austin, and Juanita Wright; two sisters, Ethel Stanley, Ruth Lazenby; three brothers, Marvin, John, and Doug Powell. Walter was a World War II veteran. He was a long time member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church and a member of Franklin County Gideon's. Flora Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends at Flora Funeral Service, 665 South Main Street in Rocky Mount from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM on Wednesday, July 6, 2016. The funeral will be at 11 AM Thursday, July 7 at Pleasant Hill Methodist Church, 2717 Ruritan Rd, Rocky Mount, VA 24151 with interment to follow in the church cemetery.
