William D. (Bill) Burgess

William “Billy” Delma Burgess, 72 of Roanoke passed away Friday, February 12, 2021. He was a long-time member of Christ Lutheran Church of Roanoke, serving as an usher and participating in their HandyFolk group. He served in the Vietnam War in the 500 ^th engineering division. Billy worked at Norfolk Southern and retired after 42 years of service. Billy was also an active and supporting member of the Southwestern Virginia Antique Tractor and Gas Engine Association and also the Southwestern Virginia Antique Farm Days. His life revolved around his family, especially his grandchildren. He was a devoted husband, father, brother, Papaw, and friend. He was a master craftsman who excelled in everything he did. He not only excelled as a craftsman but, in every aspect of life. He always put the needs of others before himself. Billy was preceded in death by his parents Delma A. Burgess and Geneva Turman Burgess. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Carolyn Burgess; his son, Jonathan and daughter-in-law Lauren; grandchildren, Lane, Jonathan II, Olivia; sister, Peggy Burgess; brother, Mike and sister-in-law Sandra; sister, Susan Eggleton; nephew, Matthew Eggleton; nieces, Amanda Eggleton, Terri Burgess and Jenny Marshall; sister-in-law, Patricia Lancaster; brother-in-law, Jim Crump and wife Julia; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and very special friends. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Mark Schmitt, Dr. Joshua Morales, Dr. Brett Adams, and their dedicated staff and nursing teams at Blue Ridge Cancer Center. The family would also like to say a special thank you to the care team at Roanoke Memorial Hospital on 7 South CCU. A private family service will be held on Wednesday, February 17, 2021 and a memorial service and celebration of life will be held at a later date.
