Dr. William L. Smith, (77) of Wirtz, Virginia, died the 31 st of October, 2018.

Dr. Smith was the son of the late William Garland Smith and Mary Eyler Smith of Lynchburg, Virginia. He was born and raised in Lynchburg, Virginia. Dr. Smith graduated from E. C. Glass HS, received a B.S. in Biology and Chemistry from Lynchburg College and a Ph.D. degree in Pharmacology from Virginia Commonwealth University.   His work spanning many years in the pharmaceutical industry led to the development of cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and other treatments including an individual patent on a leading anti-nausea drug.

Dr. Smith was quite active in community affairs, serving as a Boy Scout Leader of Troop 730 of the Cardinal District in Richmond, Virginia as well as a Girl Scout leader.   He was an Eagle Scout and was awarded the Silver Beaver Award by the Boy Scouts for distinguished service to youth. He received the Distinguished Service Award from the Jaycees and a Distinguished Service Award from the United Way.

Dr. Smith was an avid outdoorsman, woodworker and later in life, a golfer.

Dr. Smith is survived by his beloved wife, Muriel Dillmann Smith; two daughters, Mary Ruth Smith Peeler of England and Elizabeth Faye Valencia of Scottsdale, Arizona; a step-son, Dr. Gregory Carl Zachmann of Roanoke, Virginia; a step-daughter Rebecca Jean Zachmann Ford of San Rafael, California; grandchildren Annagail Katherine Peeler and Genevieve Elizabeth Peeler, Edward Ernest Valencia, Junior, Jacob Levi Valencia, Evan Alexander Zachmann, Andrew Gregory Zachmann, Jackson Owen Ford and Tyler Zachmann Ford; brothers, James Patrick Smith of Riner, Virginia, Robert Luther Smith of Lynchburg, Virginia and Mark Allan Smith of Florida, and a sister, Carole Johanna White of New Kent, Virginia. He is preceded in death by brother Kenneth Smith.

A memorial service in celebration of the life of Dr. William Levi Smith will take place on Thursday, November 8 at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Ecumenical Parish with Reverend Bea Miller officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Dr. William Levi Smith to your local Church, Boy Scout or Girl Scout Council.
