William McClain Torrence, age 88 of Rocky Mount died Wednesday, February 23, 2011. He was born July 9, 1922 in Campbell County, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie Davis Torrence and Esther Tweedy Torrence; and a sister, Nell Torrence Washburn. Surviving are his wife, Florence Davis Torrence; son, William McClain “Mac” Torrence, Jr. and wife Margaret and their children, Davis and Elizabeth all of Rocky Mount; daughter, Mary Torrence Guy and husband Jay and their daughter, Serina of Mechanicsville; sisters and brothers, Helen T. Burton of Richmond, Gladys T. Fix of Lynchburg, Virginia T. Caldwell of Appomattox and Marvin G. Torrence of Lynchburg. Also surviving are brothers and sisters-in-law. Mabel D. McCaughey of Arkansas, Mildred E. Lee of Cumberland, Maryland, Rebecca D. Jackson of Mebane, NC, Veta D. Woody and husband Curtis of Roanoke, Dave Berry of Atlanta, GA, Frances Davis of Newport News; brother-in-law, Bob Washburn of Malvern, PA; numerous nieces and nephews. Bill was a World War II Veteran serving in the 1st Armored Division in North Africa and Italy as a Tank Commander. He attended and played football at the College of William and Mary, then Lynchburg College. He retired from the Lane Company after 39 years of service. While working in Rocky Mount he met his beautiful bride-to-be Flo and they were married for 51 wonderful years. Bill was a member of Rocky Mount United Methodist Church, serving on various committees. Memorial services will be conducted from Flora Funeral Chapel 2 p.m. Saturday with Dr. John A. Plummer officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Chapel of Devotion at Mountain View Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Rocky Mount United Methodist Church, 35 North Main Street, Rocky Mount, Virginia 24151 or to a charity of your choice. His family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Flora Funeral Service & Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
